I will now shower and clean up.  CIO

<888> 11/27/12 Tuesday 1:10 A.M..  I checked the mail, but I did not get any mail today.  More than likely the people who rent in Greenwich, Connecticut through the Florida hurricane season will be leaving at the end of November 2012, so we will probably have a new group of more affluent cold weather people whom come down here to visit for our warmer winters compared to the real North country winters.  CIO

<888> 11/26/12 Monday 7:50 P.M..  I explained to the young person from Hilton Head last night my recipe for oatmeal after I saw him buying cold cereal on sale at http://www.cvs.com/ .  I basically think I have put on a lot of weight eating oatmeal over the years.  Horses eat oats, so it is probably good for one.  I buy a 48 ounce container of Old Fashioned Welcome to Quaker Oats at the Stop and Shop for $4.99.  To make it, I take a microwave proof bowl.  I put in a half cup of Quaker Old Fashioned oatmeal and a little less than a cup of water.  I then put the bowl in the microwave oven with a microwave lid on it, so it does not splatter, and I microwave it for 1 minute and 40 seconds.  I then add generic honey to taste and a little bit of milk, and I mix it all up in the bowl.  I then peel and slice a banana on to the cooked oatmeal.  I no longer add cinnamon, because cinnamon gives one intestinal gas which is not user friendly.  Over time, one will become as big as a horse.  CIO

<888> 11/26/12 Monday 9:10 A.M..  I found a picture of Jim Eldert today (23) Jim Eldert on Facebook.  He no longer looks like the Dutch Boy Paint Boy.  One has to remember, Helen Kress Williams requested that we keep an eye on him back in 1973, when New York City had no energy.  Obviously Jim would probably know his way around Florida today, but my perspective from the "Old Guard" days http://mikelouisscott.com/photo/old-florida-post-card-011506.jpg might not match with his.  Of course I did live in Pensacola, Florida from 1954 to 1956, and I tried to return to Florida in 1976 through 1979 during the winters, but I was left starving to death, and after my last attempt to return back in February 1982, I decided I am much more comfortable living up north around my Nordic friends than living on oranges and yogurt and slimming down to 125 pounds.  People in the North Country need more body fat to stay warm.  However, from what I have read there are a few prosperous people left down in Florida John's Island Club , but I was thinking this morning after chatting with someone from Hilton Head about the alligators on the beach in Hilton Head that more than likely since Florida is further south, there are probably alligators on the beach in Florida, I just never noticed them.  CIO

<888> 11/26/12 Monday 7:40 A.M..  I just woke up again, and I ate a piece of pumpkin pie with Cool Whip Lite.  I am working on the Windows 8 machine.  I hooked it up, so I can upload my notes through the network.  The old primary work computer http://mikelouisscott.com/computer.htm is a bit slow for working on with the today's faster internet.  Since it is Cyber Monday which does not mean much to people with low funding, I am not sure what I am suppose to do.  It is easier to work with the Windows 8 computer with the keyboard in one's lap, since the keyboard is a bit high on the platform.  I chatted with the regular at Starbucks last night who is from California.  When I went out there about four times between 1978 and 1980, I knew Jim Eldert in Santa Cruz, California, but we were so disheveled by the time we arrived in California, he did not want to admit he knew us.  Driving across country on limited funds is more than an adventure.  During the last two trips to California in the summer and fall of 1980, I was put up during the summer trip for a few days by Vincent Butler in Santa Cruz, California.  He had a presentable home.  Also on that same trip Joel from Laguna Beach put me up for a couple of nights at his beach house and also during the fall trip with a friend, he also put us up for a night.  Most of time in California on the previous trips and the fall trip, I had a car, so we slept in the car in various camp grounds up in the mountains overlooking the lowlands of the beach areas.  Of course back then gasoline was 59 cents a gallon, and the 1971 yellow Subaru station wagon got about 52 miles per gallon and the 1971 Volvo 242 two door sedan probably got about 25 miles per gallon.  As I recall the Volvo was not made in Sweden, but Belgium.  I did see a lot of deluxe black Volvos in California with Lombard roofs which I had never seen back east.  CIO

<888> 11/25/12 Sunday 11:25 P.M..  I went out after the last note.  I threw out the garbage.  I went by the Stop and Shop.  I bought a six pack of Stop and Shop English muffins for $1.69, a 59 ounce container of Florida Natural orange mango juice for $2.79, a 16 ounce package of Smart Balance Lite for $3, a five quart box of Stop and Shop powdered milk for $5.99, and bananas for .79 a pound for $2.04 for $15.51 total.  I then went to greater downtown Greenwich Avenue.  I chatted with a local at http://www.starbucks.com/ .  I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue and the train station area.  The Greenwich Train station was opened at 9 P.M. which is unusual.  I chatted with a relative on my wireless telephone.  They told me Downton Abbey was on Public television this evening.  I do not know if it is new episodes or reruns.  It says at http://www.pbs.org/ that it is the third season or a new series.  On the way up Greenwich Avenue, I toured CVS.  They were restocking the store.  I used the bathroom at CVS.  While I was sitting out at the top of Greenwich Avenue, I chatted with a local walker.  I was told there is a http://www.cvs.com/ on every corner in Boston, where ever that is.  I then finished my walk.  It was not very busy out tonight.  I guess people are cold.  I then went by the Putnam Shell at 401 West Putnam Avenue, and I bought $8.02 of self service premium gasoline for a dime a gallon off with my Stop and Shop card for $4.459 a gallon for 1.799 gallons at odometer reading of 71615 miles for 24.3 miles driven since Saturday November 17, 2012 for 13.508 miles per gallon in mostly local traffic.  I then returned home.  I chatted with a neighbor.  I put away my groceries.  CIO

<888> 11/25/12 Sunday 7:15 P.M..  I ate a bowl of sour cream and onion potato chips before going to bed.  I woke up at 5 P.M., and I chatted with a relative.  There was a cooking smoke alarm in the building, and the night custodian reset the alarm.  I chatted with neighbors.  Apparently a long time neighbor passed away on Thanksgiving Day.  I chatted with a friend.  My friend has relatives in Great Barrington, Massachusetts which Smithsonian Magazine says is the best small town in America.  He goes deer hunting there every fall, and he has come down with Lyme Disease five times in the last ten years while deer hunting up there, so it might not be such a great small town.  I ate breakfast of oatmeal with honey and milk and sliced banana, a toasted English muffin with olive oil, a 12 ounce glass of watered down punch with vitamins and supplements, and a cup of coffee with Splenda sweetener and milk.  I washed the breakfast dishes.  I made my bed.  I will now shower and clean up.  I will then go downtown for a walk.  CIO

<888> 11/21/12 Wednesday 5:25 A.M..  Although I am interested in the English, in my travels to Europe, I have never visited the United Kingdom.  Since I spoke English in Europe besides five years of high school French, I met a few English travelers in Europe, when I visited there.  Before I moved to Greenwich, Connecticut area 50 years ago, my family had lived down south in Decatur, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida.  Although there were not many English people around, my father was an executive with Chemstrand a synthetic fiber manufacturer, so he made frequent trips to the United Kingdom involved with the textile business, and he helped set up manufacturing facilities over there.  In Greenwich, we knew people in the company who were stationed in the United Kingdom.  Also in my first year at Greenwich Country Day, when we car pooled from Stamford, Connecticut, we used to drive with a British family that owned a computer software company.  Back in those days, Greenwich was very Anglophile, and there were a lot of British sports cars around.  At Taft in Watertown, Connecticut, my next door suite mate was from England, and at Lake Forest College, I had a friend from England and a good friend whose grandfather was from England.  While living in Weston, Massachusetts, we were good friend with the Station Master for British Overseas Airline Company and his family.  On my first trip to Nantucket, I traveled with one of his sons.  On my first trip to Bermuda, I flew BOAC.  While at Taft, we also used fake Bermuda draft cards and driver's licenses to buy liquor underage in New York.  In Europe in my travel in 1972, I did meet quite a lot of people from England because there was a coal miner's strike in England, so a lot of English were traveling in southern Europe to avoid the cold.  In Manhattan, when I lived there I met a lot of people from England with English connections, particularly, since one apartment I used was two blocks away from the British consulate.  There were English in south Florida when I was down there and also in Nantucket.  Since I have been back in Greenwich, Connecticut since December 1983, I have met a few British residents, but they tend to be private, and once I quit drinking alcohol about 25 years ago, I lost track of anyone that might frequent local pubs.  When my father was at Polaroid, he did have Queen Elizabeth II's Award in Industry, for the manufacturing facilities he constructed over there.  I did see Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip at Bloomingdale's Department store on July 5, 1976 during the Bicentennial Celebrations.  From what I know, my mother is 100% Dutch American, and my father's family is Scott Irish American and English American with other European blood.  CIO

<888> 11/21/12 Wednesday 5:05 A.M..  I woke up at 2 A.M., and I watched series 2 episode 10 of "Poirot".  I tried to sleep some more, but I could not fall asleep.  Yesterday morning, I ate a piece of pound cake, and just now I ate the last piece of pound cake with a 12 ounce glass of Schweppes Ginger Ale.  CIO

<888> 11/20/12 Tuesday 9:45 P.M..  I put the folding cart back in the trunk of the Audi.  I picked up the mail.  I got my $20 Food Voucher at the Stop and Shop on West Putnam Avenue from the Department of Social Services.  I have not planned on cooking a Thanksgiving meal, but maybe tomorrow, I will more inspired.  I do not like eating leftovers for a few days after Thanksgiving, but I will see how motivated I feel tomorrow.  Friends of mine said they might be coming out from Manhattan on Thanksgiving Day to visit other people and might want to go for a drive with me, but I have not heard from them yet.  CIO

<888> 11/20/12 Tuesday 9:20 P.M..  I removed the packing from the Haier television.  I attached the stand with the four screws that came with it.  I placed it on the Danish bar in the living room.  While placing it there, I broke the http://www.forbes.com/ Highlander bar glass that I had bought many years ago in the Greenwich Hospital Thrift Shop for a few pennys.  I hooked up the HDMI cable from the living room cable box to HDMI 1 and the coaxial cable.  HDMI 1 works better than the Coaxial cable.  For the Coaxial cable one sets the television channel at 3.  I also hooked up the Composite Video cables from the bedroom cable box.  On HDMI 2, I have the HDMI hub hooked up with the Memorex DVD player, the Sony BlueRay player with streaming media, and the HDMI input from the bedroom cable box which I will hook up, when I get the HDMI splitters.  It all works just fine.  I also hooked up the video input from the Epox computer video card and the Cambridge Sound Speaker System.  The power to the Haier television and the Cambridge Sound speaker system turns on with the Phillips squid UPS power device beneath the television.  One uses the Haier remote control to turn on the television.  On switches the Cable Box channels with the Phillips universal remote control or the Cable Box remote control.  I left it set at HDMI 1 for the living room cable box, and the HDMI 2 splitter is set for the BlueRay Sony streaming media device.  I stored the Haier shipping box in front of the bedroom desk, and I will have to get rid of it some time soon, since it is quite large.  There is a 30 return warranty with Amazon and Haier has a one year warranty on parts and labor.  I have to register it with Haier for the warranty.  Thus with the Input button on the Haier remote control, one can change to the various Inputs available on the Haier televison.  I set it up with its defaults in the Menu setup.  There is no need to do a channel scan, since it is controls by Digital Cable boxes.  I chatted with a relative.   CIO

<888> 11/20/12 Tuesday 2:50 A.M..  The order with tracking of UPS: Tracking Information on the order for Amazon.com: Haier L32A2120 32-Inch 720p 60Hz LCD HDTV: Electronics for $149 with free shipping says it will arrive some time today.  I disconnected the 22 inch Sceptre LCD television from the Danish bar in the living room, and I put it on the sideboard in the bedroom.  I connected its power to a power strip on the Rubbermaid hamper that one can turn on and off.  I also connected the set of Labtec speakers from the first IBM ThinkCentre to the Sceptre LCD TV, and they come on with the same power strip.  I have it hooked up to the Cablevison Digital Cable box and the Sony Streaming media device with six foot HDMI cables.  Thus it is all set up.  I moved the Black and Decker dust buster from the sideboard to the top of the Rubbermaid hamper.  I left the Cablevision, Sceptre, and Sony Streaming media device remote controls at the base of the Sceptre television.  I moved the generic Staples speakers from the Dell Latitude 4600i computer in the bedroom to the first IBM ThinkCentre.  I do not have a spare pair of speaker for the Dell Latitude 4600i computer in the bedroom, but it has a headset that works just fine.  I will hook up the Haier LCD television on the Danish bar in the living room, when it arrives later on today.  CIO

<888> 11/20/12 Tuesday 12:55 A.M..  I chatted with a relative twice.  I went out, and I threw out the garbage.  I picked up the mail.  I showered, and I cleaned up.  I went out, and I went by the Stop and Shop.  I bought a six pack of Stop and Shop English muffins for $1.49, a 64 ounce container of Ocean Spray crangrape juice for $2, a 64 ounce container of Oceanspray cranraspberry juice for $2, bananas for .79 a pound for $1.76, and broccoli crowns for  $1.99 a pound for $1.67 for $8.92 total.  I then went by the ATM machine at the Chase Bank at 19 West Putnam Avenue.  I then went by CVS on Greenwich Avenue.  I chatted with a local person.  I bought two RTH 9 foot white extension cords for $3.59 each and .46 tax for $7.64 total.  I chatted with another local.  I then went further down Greenwich Avenue.  I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue and the train station area.  I sat out at various locations.  At the top of Greenwich Avenue, I chatted with a local bicycle rider about bicycles.  I finished my walk.  I then went by http://www.mcdonalds.com/ on West Putnam Avenue.  I bought buy one get one free with the circular coupon of quarter pound cheeseburgers for $3.89 both and .25 tax for $4.14 total.  I ate them with a glass of ice water.  The AT&T payphone outside of McDonalds on West Putnam Avenue has a sign saying one can call anywhere in the United States for 25 cents a minute, but the telephone is missing.  I then returned home, and I put away my groceries.  CIO

<888> 11/17/12 Saturday 7:45 A.M..  I put an inch of water in a two quart Revere pot, and I put in a steaming tray.  I brushed two medium potatoes underneath cold water cleaning them, and I sliced them into quarter inch thick slices, and I added them to the pot along with 25 baby carrots cut into quarters lengthwise and broccoli crowns, and I steamed them all with the lid on the pot on high electric burner heat for 15 minutes lowering it to medium high for the last 5 minutes.  Four minutes into the steamed vegetables, I added three tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil to a fry pan, and I heated it for three minutes on medium high electric burner heat, and then I added a 12 ounce 1 inch thick top round London Broil.  I seared it on both sides adding garlic powder, ground black pepper and Italian seasoning to each side.  Then I flipped it every minute and after six minutes, I added three tablespoons of soy sauce, and I flipped it every 30 second for about two minutes until the soy sauce was reduced.  I ate the London Broil with Lea and Perrins Worcestershire sauce and Jack Daniels barbecue sauce, and I added Smart Balance Spread and extra virgin olive oil to the vegetables.  I ate it all with a 12 ounce glass of Sprite and a cup of green tea with Splenda sweetener and Borden's lemon juice.  I watched and http://www.abcnews.com/ program on food and restaurants.

<888> 11/11/12 Sunday 3:45 A.M..  I chatted with a relative earlier.  I installed and configured Windows 8 Pro on the second partition on the third IBM ThinkCentre by the Ethan Allen recliner.  It seems to work just fine.  I did not put Microsoft Money 2007 on it, since although it worked on the beta machine, the download test file said it would not work with Windows 8.  I also had to download the Windows 7 drivers for the MSI ATI 128MB X600 Pro PCI-E Express x16 DVI VGA video card.  The Windows 8 Pro DVD video driver did not support two monitors.  However, the Netflix applet does not work with the ATI drivers, so perhaps there will be an upgraded driver in the future.  I also installed the SIIG IC-510012-S2 5.1 audio card drivers and the TrendNet driver for the Trendnet Router USB print server.  Also the Lexmark E238 driver that came with the Windows 8 Pro DVD did not work like in the beta, but the Lexmark download does.  There are probably a lot of features in Windows 8 that I have not discovered yet.  I am backing it up with the backup program from the first partition operating system backing up both partitions to the Rosewell external hard drive.  I probably will not be using it very much, since it is not my primary work computer, but I have it setup for demonstration purposes if anyone is ever interested in it from my point of view.  CIO

I have lived here on and off for fifty years.  One of the unique oddities about Greenwich, Connecticut is that we have no Judicial Courts except for parking court.  All Judicial proceeding are held in nearby Stamford, Connecticut.  Yet when we vote in our local elections, we are not allowed to vote for the Judges, District Attorneys, Prosecutors, and Sheriffs in our area.  The only Judicial office I have seen on our local ballot in past years is that of Probate Judge.  Thus the Citizens of Greenwich, Connecticut are not fairly represented in the local Judicial proceedings, since they are not allowed to vote for the various elected officers.  CIO

<888> 11/08/12 Thursday 11:55 P.M..  Town of Greenwich Final Storm Update, Thursday, November 8, 2012:

Good evening.  This is the final update on Hurricane Sandy and Winter Storm Athena from the Town of Greenwich.  Today is Thursday, November 8th.

The Town’s declared state of emergency was rescinded by First Selectman Tesei effective at 4:00 pm today.  After over 11 days of full-time operation, the Town’s Emergency Operations Center has been closed.  The remaining emergency shelter at the Eastern Middle School has been shut down and the school has resumed classes.  Power has been restored to all but eleven (11) Greenwich CL&P customers.  Gasoline Filling Station lines are lessening as the fuel supply to the New York metropolitan area normalizes.

Volunteers from the American Red Cross will be distributing kits containing a mop, broom, gloves, disinfectant, trash bags and other items that can be used to clean up homes affected by water and debris on Saturday, November 10th from Noon until 2:00 pm at the Cos Cob and Sound Beach firehouses.  As always, all items of assistance are provided by the Red Cross free of charge to those in need.

The police department would like to take this opportunity to remind residents not to become complacent now that the worst is over.  Prepare for the next event by creating a disaster kit and having a family emergency plan.  Tips on disaster planning can be found on the American Red Cross website.

Residents who wish to engage in Halloween Trick-or-Treating are encouraged to do so this Sunday, November 11th, from 4 pm to 8pm.  The weather is forecast to be absolutely perfect.  For safety’s sake please have small children home before dark.

Weather events of the last ten days, which claimed dozens of lives right next door in New York, resulted in no deaths or serious injuries in the Town of Greenwich.  We have persevered through what could easily have been a catastrophe.  While the planning and leadership displayed by local government officials certainly played no small part in our success, there are two groups who should be held out for special recognition.  The frontline Public Works employees, municipal parks and tree workers, utility company line crews, firefighters, EMTs and police officers who, quite literally, wore the “boots on the ground” during this event all deserve our heartfelt thanks.

Additionally however, Greenwich residents should thank each other.  That we can rely on our community to come together, to check on that elderly neighbor who hasn’t had power for a few days, to help each other and in some cases, to save each other, was critical to our collective success.  Going forward, we should all endeavor to take that same commitment to community and rather than permit it to blow away with the storm, leverage it to improve our shared circumstance.  Meet your neighbors, patronize a local business, donate to a Town charity or volunteer with a civic group.  The strength of our community has saved us once and it can save us again.

Residents will be updated via this same system the next time an emergency occurs.  Until then, please remain civil and stay safe.

Town of Greenwich Message, Wednesday, November 7, 2012:

Good afternoon.  This message is being sent on behalf of First Selectman Peter Tesei.  It contains a weather advisory concerning the Nor’easter hitting our area today.

The first named Winter Storm of the season – Athena – is expected to increase in intensity as it moves into our region this afternoon and overnight.  The latest forecast models show an extended period of high winds and potentially moderate flooding in low lying areas.  High tides will occur in Greenwich Harbor at 5:01 PM tonight and 5:35 AM tomorrow morning.  Obviously these will be the most critical periods for storm surge-related flooding which may be several feet over normal.  Keep in mind that Hurricane Sandy has damaged many sea walls and in some areas changed the outline of coastal areas and inlets.  The high tide flooding we are all accustomed to during previous storms may be very different with Winter Storm Athena.  A voluntary evacuation of immediate coastal areas is being encouraged.  The emergency shelter at the Eastern Middle School remains open on a 24-hour basis.

Winds will intensify after dark and are forecast to reach 25-30 MPH sustained speeds with gusts between 45 and 60 MPH.  With many trees and structures already compromised by damage from Hurricane Sandy, there is significant potential for wind-related damage.   Please remain indoors during the storm - especially during periods of high winds.

The Town’s Emergency Operations Center will remain open throughout this weather event.  The Town has requested that utility companies, including Connecticut Light and Power, keep resources already in Town here to make emergency repairs if required.

Residents are advised to monitor local media outlets for up to date forecast information.  WGCH Radio – AM1490 will remain on the air throughout the storm.

If you must be outdoors, exercise extreme caution and be wary of road conditions.  Debris remains on many portions of the right-of-way from Hurricane Sandy.

Additional announcements will be made via this same system as warranted.

Please remain calm, stay indoors and keep safe.

End of Message:

Town of Greenwich Message, Tuesday, November 6, 2012:

Good evening.  This is the daily update on Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts for Election Day, Tuesday, November 6th.  Please don’t forget to vote.

The Town remains in a declared state of emergency and the Emergency Operations Center remains open.  As of this evening, all but 5% of Connecticut Light and Power customers in Town remain without service.  Even though we are down to 5%, hundreds of CL&P crews remain dedicated to power restoration in Greenwich.

Temperatures tonight are expected to be very cold again tonight.  If you are without power or heat, the shelter at Eastern Middle School remains open on a 24-hour basis.  Please feel free to come to the shelter.

The Nor’easter scheduled to arrive in our area tomorrow night into Thursday seems to be diminishing in strength.  While some wind gusts may still be strong, the likelihood of extremely cold temperatures and flooding potential seem reduced.  Obviously that’s a good thing – if for no other reason than all of us here at the Emergency Operations Center could really use some sleep.

While the Police Department has not yet had any fraud-related complaints, we want to remind everyone that there are always opportunistic criminals out there looking to victimize people after disasters.  You should only give money to established national charities or local charity groups with whom you have already established a relationship.  Avoid in-person and telephone solicitations from home repair contractors you’ve never heard of or who claim to be affiliated with a state or federal disaster relief agency.  Always ask contractors for their Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor Registration Number and check the number by calling the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection at 1-800-842-2649 or checking their website at ct.gov/dcp. Never pay cash for repairs.  Legitimate contractors will neither ask for nor expect payment in cash.  If you need a contractor ask your neighbors for someone they know is reliable or ask your insurance company for a referral.

The Holly Hill Lane Transfer Station will be open tomorrow and residents may dispose of their own storm-related organic debris at no cost.  Commercial landscapers and haulers are still required to pay normal fees.

Gasoline Filling Station lines are lessening as the fuel supply to the New York metro area begins to improve.  The Police Department continues to monitor this situation closely.

Schools will be open tomorrow, November 7th.  There remain many partial street obstructions and sidewalk obstructions in Town.  If your child rides the bus or if you drive your child to school, please allow extra time.  If your child walks to school, we encourage you to go with your child tomorrow to help ensure the walking route is safe or, at minimum, reinforce to your child he or she should avoid any downed wire and about how to safely navigate sidewalk obstructions.

As a reminder, the Town is suggesting that those residents who wish to engage in Halloween Trick-or-Treating do so this Sunday, November 11th from 4 to 8 pm.  With the time change and the early onset of darkness, we are encouraging children to get out early and return home before dark.

Residents will be updated via this same system tomorrow evening.  Until then, please be patient, remain civil, keep warm and stay safe.

Town of Greenwich message, Monday, November 5, 2012:

Good evening.  This is Captain Mark Kordick of the Town of Greenwich Police Department with the daily update on Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts for Monday, November 5th from the Town’s Emergency Operations Center.

The Town remains in a declared state of emergency and the Emergency Operations Center is open.  As of this evening, 19% of Connecticut Light and Power customers in Town remain without service.  At total of 170 line crews, 80 tree crews and 31 pole set crews are at work in Greenwich.  CL&P still cannot provide a solid timetable for complete restoration of all service in Greenwich.

Temperatures tonight are expected to be near or slightly below freezing.  The shelter at Eastern Middle School remains open on a 24-hour basis.  If you are without power and heat, there is no reason to remain at home, in the dark and be cold.  Please feel free to come to the shelter.

A Nor’easter is scheduled to arrive in our area Wednesday night into Thursday.  We are watching this storm closely in the Emergency Operations Center.  Wind gusts up to 60 MPH are considered possible along the coast.  A storm surge 3 to 5 feet above normal is predicted but fortunately, the astronomical tides are low this week.  Still, some local flooding may be possible, and with Sandy leaving so many compromised trees and structures behind, the winds may be problematic.  Please watch the forecast and be prepared for this weather event – especially if wind or flooding predictions worsen.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning is a real danger.  Never use generators indoors or allow them to run near open doors or windows.  Never allow vehicles to run inside garages, even with the garage door open.  Never use a stove or oven for heat.

Please do not leave debris, wood or leaf piles on any part of the Town right of way or on the paved portion of any street.  Not only is it unsafe for pedestrians, motorists and emergency vehicles, it is discourteous to your neighbors, and most importantly, it is illegal.  For those of you looking to do something to assist your community’s first responders, not obstructing streets with debris is really very, very helpful to us.

The Holly Hill Lane Transfer Station will be open tomorrow from 7am to 4pm and residents may dispose of their own storm-related organic debris at no cost.  Commercial landscapers and haulers are still required to pay normal fees.

As a reminder, schools are closed tomorrow for Election Day.  All polling places in Greenwich will be open.  Please take the time to come out and vote.

And now the news everyone is anxious to hear: The Town is suggesting that those residents who wish to engage in Halloween Trick-or-Treating do so this Sunday, November 11th from 4 to 8 pm.  With the time change and the early onset of darkness, we are encouraging children to get out early and return home before dark.

If you are cold and have no power or if you need water, food or other essential assistance, please feel free to call the Greenwich Police Department’s non-emergency number at 203-622-8000 for help.

Residents will be updated via this same system tomorrow evening.  Until then, please be patient, remain civil, keep warm and stay safe.

Town of Greenwich message, Sunday, November 4, 2012:

Good evening.  This is the daily update on Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts for Sunday, November 4th from the Town’s Emergency Operations Center.

The Town remains in a declared state of emergency.  As of this evening, 27% of Greenwich’s Connecticut Light and Power customers remain without service.  At total of 165 line crews, 59 tree crews and 29 pole set crews are at work, in Greenwich.  The universal time provided by CL&P for 95% restoration to all customers statewide is tomorrow or Tuesday.

We are forecast to have another very cold evening.  The shelter at Eastern Middle School remains open on a 24-hour basis.  Warm showers are also available there.  Please bring your own towel and toiletries.  The Western Greenwich Civic Center and Greenwich Libraries will be open during regular hours to serve as warming centers and for cell phone charging.

Please do not use unsafe alternate heating sources in your home.  We have already experienced a house fire in Greenwich as the result of an unsafe alternate heat source.  Never use generators indoors.  Never use a stove or oven for heat.  Keep in mind that some smoke detectors or carbon monoxide alarms will not work without power.

Please do not leave storm debris on any part of the Town right of way.  Never leave downed wood, limbs, leaves or debris on the paved portion of any street.  Not only is it unsafe for pedestrians, motorists and emergency responders, it is discourteous to your neighbors, and most importantly, it is illegal.  For those of you looking to do something to help your community’s first responders, not obstructing streets with debris is a great way to start.

The Holly Hill Lane Transfer Station will be open with extended hours on Monday and Tuesday from 7am to 4pm and continues to accept storm-related organic debris from residents for free.

After careful analysis of remaining road closures, sidewalk obstructions, wires down and other hazards, on consultation with Town of Greenwich Public Safety officials, the Superintendent has decided that all Greenwich public schools will remain closed tomorrow, Monday, November 5th.  Schools are already scheduled to be closed to students on Tuesday, November 6th for Election Day.  Normal Teacher and Staff Development activities scheduled for Tuesday are scheduled to proceed normally.

A decision on a rescheduled date for school Halloween parties and townwide trick-or-treating, if any, has been deferred as Town Officials watch the forecast for Wednesday’s developing Nor’easter.

All Greenwich polling places will be open for Tuesday’s election.  Do not forget to vote.

If you are cold and have no power or if you need water, food or other essential assistance, please feel free to call the Greenwich Police Department’s non-emergency number at 203-622-8000 for help.

Town of Greenwich message, Saturday, November 3, 2012:

Good evening.  This is the November 3rd update on Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts from the Town’s Emergency Operations Center.

The Town remains in a declared state of emergency.  39% of Greenwich Connecticut Light and Power customers remain without electric service.  Municipal officials, including First Selectman Tesei entertained a high level meeting with CL&P executives this afternoon in an effort to facilitate restoration efforts.  As of this evening, a total of 182 CL&P power restoration line crews and 50 tree and debris crews are at work, in Greenwich, dedicated to restoration efforts.  CL&P continues to logically prioritize work by selecting work locations based on returning service to the highest number of customers with the lowest number of crew hours required to affect that particular repair.  No restoration prediction has been provided specific to Greenwich.  The CL&P statewide prediction remains 95% restoration by Monday or Tuesday.

Power has been restored to all Town of Greenwich polling places and no power-related interference with Tuesday’s election is anticipated.  Please come out and vote.

Greenwich Libraries and the Western Greenwich Civic Center remain in normal daytime operation to serve as warming centers and cellphone charging locations.

A cold front is anticipated to move through tonight and overnight temperatures will drop into the 30’s.  If you are cold because your home has no heat, please come to the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center shelter at 51 Hendrie Avenue in Riverside.  It remains in 24-hour operation.  There really is no reason to stay at home and be cold.

Please do NOT attempt to heat your home with unsafe alternate heat sources.  Greenwich First Responders had to respond today to a home in the Back Country when a halogen heat lamp, powered by a portable generator was knocked over by a pet and started a fire.  The home sustained major damage.  Do not use stoves or ovens for heat.  Please keep in mind that without power, some smoke and carbon monoxide detectors may not work.  Fire safety is paramount during power outages.

The Holly Hill Lane transfer station will be open from 10 am to 4 pm tomorrow and 7 am to 4 pm on Monday and Tuesday.  As always, residents may dispose of storm-related organic material there free of charge.  The front gate remains closed due to storm damage.  What is the normal exit on Muskrat Pond Drive must be used for both entry and exit.

Do not leave storm debris on any part of the Town right of way.  Never leave downed wood, limbs, leaves or debris on the paved portion of any street.  Not only is it unsafe for pedestrians, motorists and emergency responders and discourteous to your neighbors, most importantly, it is illegal.  Quite frankly, with all we have to do right now, the Police Department would rather not have to spend our time issuing citations to residents over highway nuisances.

A decision on school re-openings and the rescheduled date for Halloween-trick-or-treating will be made by 2:00 pm tomorrow.

<888> 11/04/12 Sunday 1:55 A.M..   Fall, back an hour, Daylight Savings time just ended.  I ate the rest of the potato salad and with a 12 ounce glass of http://www.coke.com/ .  CIO

<888> 11/04/12 Sunday 1:50 A.M..  I went out after the last note.  The Mobil and the Shell stations on West Putnam Avenue were out of gasoline.  I went by the A&P Fresh, and they still had not gotten a major delivery.  The Shell Station across the street from Whole Foods had a long line.  I went to Whole Foods, and I bought bananas for .99 a pound for $2.42 and two Washington State red apples for $1.99 a pound for $2.03 for $4.45 total.  I then went downtown, and I walked the entire length of Greenwich Avenue and the train station area.  I sat out at various locations.  I chatted with a few locals.  I stopped by CVS, and I bought buy one get one free of 60 capsule CVS B-100 for $12.99 and .82 tax for $13.81 total.  I then bought two 7 ounce bags of Cheese Combos for $1.50 each, and two 19 ounce cans of Campbell's Roadhouse chili for $2 each and one Campbell's 19 ounce Roadhouse chili with stead for $2 for $9 total.  I used the bathroom at CVS.  After my walk, I sat out for a while.  I chatted with someone at Starbucks.  I then drove east on East Putnam Avenue.  All of the gasoline stations to the Stamford border were closed except the Shell Station across from Whole Foods.  At the Getty station at the entrance to Old Greenwich there were about a 100 people standing in line waiting to fill up gasoline cans, but cars were not allowed.  I went by the Hyatt Hotel, and I toured the Hotel Lobby.  It was quite busy.  The utility trucks for fixing the electrical grid were parked there.  I then drove back to downtown Greenwich, and I used the bathroom at Starbucks.  I chatted with another local.  I then went back by the Shell Station across from Whole Foods, but they were closed.  I then went by the Shell Station on West Putnam Avenue which was out of gasoline, and I was told by another person that the Round Hill Service Center was pumping gasoline, but they did not know where it was.  I told them to follow me.  I drove back east on West Putnam Avenue to the Greenwich Library, and I turned north on Lake Avenue for about two miles, and then I turned left on to Round Hill Road for about four miles to the Round Hill Service Center.  I filled up the tank with full service premium Gulf gasoline for $38.01 for $4.599 a gallon for 8.265 gallons at odometer reading of 71544 miles for 93.3 miles driving since Sunday October 14, 2012 for 11.289 miles per gallon in mostly local traffic.  The credit card machine was not working at the Round Hill Service center, so customers have to pay cash.  I then returned back down Round Hill Road, and I stopped by the Shell Station on West Putnam Avenue, and I told them the Round Hill Service station had gasoline and no line.  The Round Hill Service center told me, they might stay open for a while later.  I then drove by the Exxon gasoline station on the Port Chester border, and there were about 150 cars lined up.  I then returned home.  It is about 7 miles from my apartment in Byram to the Round Hill Service Center.  However, it is very dark driving in back country.  I was told they now have power on Round Hill Road, but one could see a lot of large fallen trees.  CIO

<888> 11/03/12 Saturday 6:30 P.M..  I chatted with two relatives.  I will go out shortly.  I put out some knit caps, gloves, and scarves.  CIO

<888> 11/03/12 Saturday 5:55 P.M..  I put the British Union Jack and the Dutch Tricolor flags back up in the hallway.  I learned back in February 1978, after I designed a desktop computer in December 1977, I went to Paradise Island in the Bahamas in February 1978, and I was entertained by Richard Mercy who looked like Prince Charles, and he told me there were 5,000 British citizens working for R.C.A. Global Communications in the Bahamas on their satellite ground stations.  I will now eat a fresh muffin, and then I will dress up warmly and go downtown.  CIO

<888> 11/03/12 Saturday 5:30 P.M..  I closed the living room windows.  I forgot to turn on my wireless internet during this emergency.  I just turned it on, so it is available to anyone with range.  It is unsecured, so I hope anyone whom uses it, does not abuse it, if they should I will have to turn it off.  CIO

<888> 11/03/12 Saturday 5:15 P.M..  I took the two http://www.army.mil/ extreme cold weather sleeping bags good to minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit out of storage, and I put them behind the Ethan Allen recliner in the living room.  I keep them around the apartment in case I ever lose the electric heat in the winter.  I moved from the bedroom the two DeLonghi oil filled radiators, and I put one behind and to the left of the primary work computer chair in the living room, and I put another one to the left of the IBM ThinkCentre in front of the mahogany bureau in the living room.  It usually does not get cold enough in the apartment to use them, but I have used them in the past on extreme cold days.  About four years ago, it was zero degrees Fahrenheit here during the first week of December.  It is going down to 35 degrees Fahrenheit here tonight.  CIO

<888> 11/03/12 Saturday 4:40 P.M..  I took the air conditioner out of the center living room window.  I put the window blank back in the window and secured it with a nut driver and star bit.  I stored the air conditioner underneath the sitting chair at the hallway entrance.  While I had the screen off, I put two new AA alkaline batteries in the Oregon Scientific weather station sending unit, which should be fully charged for the cold winter coming ahead.  I left the window unlatched, so I can still open it with its crank for any warmer days in the near future.  Once it gets colder, I will latch it closed for the winter.  CIO

<888> 11/03/12 Saturday 1:50 P.M..  I showered, and I cleaned up.  I chatted with neighbors.  The building elevator is broken.  I started two loads of laundry, and I am just about to start the dry cycles.  I threw out the garbage and the old periodical literature.  I watered the plants.  CIO

<888> 11/02/12 Friday 11:30 P.M..  Town of Greenwich report, Friday November 2, 2012:

Good evening.  This is the Friday, November 2nd update on Hurricane recovery efforts from the Town’s Emergency Operations Center.

The Town remains under a declared state of emergency.  The Town’s Emergency Operations Center remains open on a full-time basis.  Road clearing, debris removal and general recovery efforts remain on-going.

49% of Greenwich residents remain without electric power.  Fifty (50) two-man line crews arrived in Greenwich this afternoon from Quebec, Canada, bringing the total number of Connecticut Light and Power restoration crews assigned by CL&P to work in Greenwich to 127 multiple-worker crews.  All but one (1) Town of Greenwich polling location have had power restored.  The remaining location is scheduled to have power restored in time for Election Day.  While no specific timetable for complete power restoration in Greenwich has been provided, CL&P has indicated that they anticipate 95% power restoration statewide by Monday or Tuesday.

It’s turning colder – especially at night.  A 24-hour shelter location remains established at the Eastern Middle School.  The Western Greenwich Civic Center will also be staffed by Red Cross volunteers as a drop-in warning station and cellphone charging location during the Civic Center’s normal, daytime operating hours.  Other places happy to charge cellphones include Greenwich Library or any of its branch locations which have all reopened.

For residents without power, drinking water and pre-packaged cold meals will be distributed this evening until 8:00 pm at the Banksville and Sound Beach Avenue firehouses.

With gasoline and diesel fuel shortages in New York and New Jerseyty, we have seen a large influx of motorists traveling to Connecticut for fuel.  Some gasoline filling stations are experiencing long lines – especially those near the I-95 corridor.  Greenwich Police resources have been deployed to manage this situation.  This condition is temporary and we have been assured by State officials that the actual regional wholesale supply of gasoline remains abundant.

Greenwich Point remains closed until further notice.  Byram Park is partially open with limited access.  Some previously issued permits for open field use will be honored this weekend, however all fields will be in their post-storm condition.  With all of the on-going disaster-related work, no Parks personnel are available to prepare, maintain or groom fields for play.

The Transfer Station will operate with extended hours this weekend to accommodate storm clean-up efforts.  They will be open 8 to 4 tomorrow, 10 to 4 on Sunday and 7 to 4 on Monday and Tuesday.  Greenwich residents are reminded that storm-related organic debris may be disposed of at the Holly Hill transfer station at no cost.

A decision concerning school openings next week and the rescheduled date of both school Halloween parties and townwide trick-or-treating will be made no later than Sunday at 2:00 pm.

If you don’t have power or heat and need to warm up or get a meal, please don’t be shy about taking advantage of the services available.  If you are unsure about what to do or what services are available, please feel free to contact the Greenwich Police Department’s non-emergency number at 203-622-8000.  Another update announcement will be made tomorrow evening.  Until then, please remain patient and act safely.

<888> 11/02/12 Friday 11:25 P.M..  Town of Greenwich report, Thursday November 1, 2012:

Good evening.  This is the November 1st update on Hurricane recovery efforts from the Town’s Emergency Operations Center.

The Town remains under a declared state of emergency.  The Town’s Emergency Operations Center remains open on a full-time basis.  Road clearing efforts remain on-going.  Most, but not all, primary roads have been re-opened.

56% of Greenwich residents remain without electric power.  Town of Greenwich officials, met with the president of Connecticut Light and Power and other executives today, at the Town of Greenwich Public Safety Complex in an effort to ensure that the Town is doing everything it can to both support CL&P’s restoration efforts and leverage as many restoration resources as possible.  By tomorrow morning, a total of 53 two-man line crews should be at work in Greenwich.

As the number of residents requiring shelter services decreases, effective tomorrow, 24-hour overnight shelter operations will be consolidated at the Eastern Middle School shelter location.  The Western Greenwich Civic Center shelter will remain open during daytime hours as a reception center for residents who would like to get out of the cold, charge electronic devices or enjoy a small snack.  Tomorrow, Friday, November 2nd, the Western Greenwich Civic Center shelter will be open from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm.  The Eastern Middle School shelter will remain open on a 24-hour basis until it is no longer required.

The Greenwich Fire Department would like to remind residents NOT to try to heat their homes by turning on gas stoves or using other unsafe alternate heating sources.  Unsafe alternate heat sources can start fires or emit dangerous amounts of carbon monoxide.  If your home is without power, some types of smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors may not work.  Fire safety is paramount during power outages.

The Health Department is recommending all residents keep food safety in mind over the coming days.  If your power has been out for an extended period, food in refrigerators and freezers is likely to have spoiled.  If your power comes back, do not refreeze thawed food.

Announcements and reminders:

It’s getting chilly at night.  If you don’t have power or heat and need to warm up or get a meal, please take advantage of the services available.  If you are unsure about what to do or what services are available, feel free to contact the Greenwich Police Department’s non-emergency number at 203-622-8000.  Another update announcement will be made tomorrow evening.  Until then, please remain patient and act safely.

<888> 11/02/12 Friday 10:15 P.M..  I went out after the last note.  I went by CVS on Greenwich Avenue, and I picked up a prescription.  I chatted  with amigot.com - Michael Amigot's blog -- Good Ideas & Inspiring Stories About Social Media .  I then went further downtown, and I sat out for a while.  I chatted with a regular at Starbucks.  Starbucks was busy with people using the wireless internet.  I did not notice if anyone was buying coffee.  I then went by Whole Foods Market | Whole Foods Market , and I bought a Costa Rican pineapple for $3.99 and a Bermuda onion for $1.49 a pound for .67 for $4.66 total.  Whole Foods is fully stocked, and the store seemed normal from my perspective, but it is more expensive than the other grocery stores that are without food.  I noticed on my way back home both the Shell Stations on East Putnam Avenue and West Putnam Avenue had long lines of motorists waiting to buy gasoline.  Earlier I had checked out Peabody's garage on Church Street, but they were out of gasoline.  I stopped by the Greenwich Library, and there was the usual group using the internet.  I noticed they had a new thick book on London, if anyone is interested.  I chatted with a relative on my wireless telephone.  I then returned home.  I picked up the mail.  CIO

<888> 11/02/12 Friday 6:20 P.M..  I ate a bowl of potato salad with a 12 ounce glass of http://www.coke.com/  and a cup of coffee with Splenda sweetener and milk.  I will now go downtown for a while.  CIO

<888> 11/02/12 Friday 5:25 P.M..   I made 150 Premier Lights 100 MM filter Peter Stokkebye Turkish pipe tobacco cigarettes while watching Series 3 Episode 3 of "Poirot".  CIO

<888> 11/02/12 Friday 3:00 P.M..  I chatted with a local walker.  The local walker who is a former http://www.navy.mil/ pilot from Pensacola, Florida told me that the Shell Station on East Putnam Avenue across the street from the Whole Foods Grocery store has a quick line for gasoline.  He also told me that the Whole Foods Grocery store is in operation and fully staffed with their usual selection of gourmet food.  The only thing I could ever afford to buy their was pineapples from Haiti in the winter for $2.99 a pineapple.  Helen Kress Williams who had stone pineapples on her gates of her vast estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island on the waterfront always said that the pineapple was the symbol of Christian Hospitality and it came from the symbol from the Christian Missionaries from Boston who first started preaching in Hawaii.  Of course with so many established members of the Williams family out on Long Island, we do not see many of them around here.   They tend to be taller than six feet tall and dark haired.  Of course Helen Kress Williams was a tiny frugal woman who would make an A&P tea bag last a week, and then she would use her old tea bags to enrich the soil in her garden.  She was a life long friend of her neighbor Alice Roosevelt Sagamore Hill National Historic Site - Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, so possibly there are other republicans across from us to the south across Long Island sound.  She knew the Bush family because one of her sons built all of the highways in Houston, Texas.  CIO

<888> 11/02/12 Friday 2:35 P.M..  I threw out the garbage.  I chatted with neighbors.  I will now make cigarettes.  I took down the British and Dutch flags, since the British were rude when I chatted with them in England earlier this morning.  I am now flying the U.S.A. Stars and Stripes  and http://www.af.mil/ flag.  I have a lot of relatives and friends in the Air Force, but they never visit me here, since they have already seen the whole world, and prefer to remain private in more remote areas of the country.  Some people do enjoy their privacy.  My Grandfather Scott who use to live near Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, always said "Believe Nothing That You Hear, and Half of What You See."  CIO

<888> 11/02/12 Friday 1:25 P.M..   I will now shower and clean up.

New Yorkers driving to Stamford, Greenwich for gas - GreenwichTime .  I saw on the Weather Channel that 80% of the gasoline stations in New Jersey are closed.  All of the gasoline stations in nearby Westchester Country are closed.  The gasoline stations in Staten Island are closed too.  I was told 80% of the gasoline stations on Long Island are closed.  The areas east of Stamford, Connecticut are suppose to have gasoline.  On the Weather Channel, they said that the New York Harbor was full of debris after Hurricane Sandy, so the fuel tankers were not able to enter the harbor to make their deliveries to the distributions points, but they are now underway after a few days of disruption.  Also some of the distribution points were flooded in the hurricane, and it takes time for them to get back online to make their regular deliveries.  Newberg, New York up the Hudson River is suppose to be one of those large distribution points.  I think here in the Connecticut, the fuel comes from the harbor in Bridgeport, Connecticut.  CIO

<888> 11/02/12 Friday 12:25 P.M..   I woke up at 9:30 A.M..  I ate breakfast of oatmeal with honey and milk and sliced banana, a toasted English muffin with olive oil, a 12 ounce glass of watered down punch, and a cup of coffee with Splenda sweetener and milk.  I washed the breakfast dishes, and I made my bed.  CIO

<888> 11/02/12 Friday 3:00 A.M..  I ate a fresh muffin.  I will now shut down the primary work computer, and I will go to bed soon.  CIO

<888> 11/02/12 Friday 2:30 A.M..  I left an information message with an out of town private security agency.  I called up the desk at the Key West Hotels- Florida Keys Luxury Resort- Casa Marina A Waldorf Astoria Resort , and I gave them a briefing.  From the background chatter around the desk, it sounds like some of the tourists still drink alcohol.  In the British Royal Navy Royal Navy, they have to wait until they get their orders for their grog Grog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ration.  Probably one of the true British people I have met from England was Richard Mercy whom lived in Eaton Square, and he was a vegan who did not drink alcohol, so the Hollywood version of the British might be different than the way they actually are.  I know one thing, it is a lot colder up there, which is why they raise and wear so much wool which down here in the Tropics of Greenwich, Connecticut we can not afford and do not really need, if one wears layers of clothing.  I have been around the waterfront in many places around the world, so I might have seen a British sailor or two, but I have not seen that many British Ships outside the old Queen Elizabeth.  For all I know the local British here might not live in Greenwich, Connecticut anymore, since it is so expensive, but they might live in Darien, Connecticut; since there is a MINI of Fairfield County | Darien MINI | Stamford MINI | Norwalk MINI | Greenwich MINI and CT Land Rover Dealer | 203-951-6133 New & Used CT Land Rover Dealer Serving Milford & Larchmont in Darien CT 06820 | Land Rover Darien and the Ox Ridge Hunt Club which are the types of things the British like to see.  They use to have a lot of old British sports cars parked in the gasoline station next to the Darien fire station in the 1960s.  The Lock Stock and Barrel restaurant at the Darien shopping center used to be the start of the cross country race to Malibu, California made famous by the movie The Cannonball Run - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia .  However, if one ever goes to Malibu http://www.malibutimes.com/  , one only sees Jim Eldert who is totally oblivious in his own world, and ignores everything, but he must like the ocean.  However, he might have moved to Bel Air, Los Angeles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia to avoid the sun after all of these years in the sun.  However, I do not watch much entertainment media, so seeing a place in California like that would probably be confusing to me, since theatre people seem to have multiple personalities.  CIO

<888> 11/02/12 Friday 12:40 A.M..  I went out, and the Shell Station at 401 West Putnam Avenue has no gasoline, but they have diesel fuel.  The Mobil Station at Weaver Street and West Putnam Avenue has no gasoline.  The http://www.exxon.com/ gasoline station on West Putnam Avenue on the Connecticut New York border has gasoline, but at this hour, there is a line of a hundred cars waiting to buy gasoline.  For all of the many British residents in distress, I came up with a toll free number to England at 1-877-854-6872, and I called them up.  When I tried to brief them on the local situation here, they told me they were well aware of the overall matter, and did not need my information.

If one looks at NRL Satellite Page , possibly Hurricane Sandy is headed towards Europe or even the United Kingdom.  The Canadians told me it was a very bad storm up in Eastern Canada.  I am fortunate, because I have a roof over my head, and I am comfortable, and I have electricity and the other necessities of life.  Unfortunately I can not come to the assistance of other individuals outside my family, since the Greenwich Housing Authority limits guests, and I am on limited income.  I have communications capabilities which a lot of older individuals might not have.  However, since Greenwich, Connecticut is a wealthy town which pays over $3 billion in taxes a year, I have better services available to me in this community than the average poor person living out there in the hinterlands.  CIO

<888> 11/01/12 Thursday 11:35 P.M..  I called up the Shell Station at 401 West Putnam Avenue, and they did not answer their telephone, when they usually do; so I do not know if that have gasoline.  I called up the Mobil station at West Putnam Avenue and Weaver Street, and they did not answer their telephone.  I called up Greenwich Exxon on West Putnam Avenue at the New York border Greenwich Exxon detail information , and they told me they do have gasoline.  CIO

<888> 11/01/12 Thursday 11:20 P.M..  I chatted with the Canadian Emergency number at 1-613-996-8885, and I gave them a bit of a briefing.  From what I know about the New York City area, a lot of the primary warehouses which include food warehouses are in the New Jersey area, because it is a transportation hub, and currently New Jersey is having some major problems.  Also a lot of the oil and fuel storage facilities are in New Jersey and Staten Island.  I think people should think about CONSERVING their resources.  CIO

<888> 11/01/12 Thursday 10:25 P.M..  I chatted with a relative.  I ate a bowl of potato salad with a 12 ounce glass of Schweppes Ginger Ale.  I called up Starbucks on Greenwich Avenue to tell them Stew Leonard's in Norwalk and Danbury have generator power, so they have food.  I called up the Greenwich Police non emergency number a 1-203-622-8000 to tell them the same thing.  I drank a cup of coffee with Splenda sweetener and milk.  I turned on the living room lights to warm up the apartment a little bit. I still have not taken out the living room air conditioner, because it gets warm in the daytime, so I use the fan on it.  When I next change the sheets, I have to put my winter comforters and bedding on the bed.  I will not put out the DeLonghi oil filled radiators in the living room until after they put in the ceiling insulation and new tiles, which might be quite a while yet, since they are going to do my apartment last, since it is a more complicated procedure with my more complicated office setup.  CIO

Earlier today, I chatted with my friend on East Fairfield beach, and he still does not have electricity.  I just now chatted with another friend who travels around Long Island, and he told me lots of houses on Long Island were crushed by falling trees.  Long Island has sandy soil being a glacier island, so the trees fall over more easily.  He also told me 80% of the gasoline stations on Long Island have no gasoline.  We both agreed the hurricane disaster situation is a lot worse than is being reported in the news.  He thinks the hurricane disaster in the New York area will bring down the National economy.  CIO

<888> 11/01/12 Thursday 4:35 P.M..  I took three pounds of Idaho potatoes, and I scrubbed them with a potato brush underneath cold water.  I then cut them with the skins into quarter inch thick slices, and I placed them in a 5 quart Revere pot half filled with water.  I brought them to a boil on high electric burner heat, and once the water boiled, I boiled them another 15 minutes.  I put a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil in the water.  While doing that I diced a 16 ounce DAK Danish ham into 1 inch by .25 inch by .25 inch pieces, and put them in a bowl.  I drained a 6 ounce can of Lindsay large pitted California olives, I cut them in half, and I put them in the bowl.  I peeled a large Bermuda onion, and I diced it into quarter inch cubic chunks and added them to the bowl.  I took five large Vlassic Kosher pickle slices, and I cut them into half inch cubic pieces, and I put them in the bowl.  Once the potatoes had boiled 12 minutes, I drained them in a  colander, and I then put them back in the Revere pot which I filled with cold water and stirred around.  I did that three time, and the last time I left the drained potatoes in the Revere pot, and I added the other previously prepared ingredients and mixed them all together with a large wooden mixing spoon.  I then seasoned the mixture with Old Bay Seasoning, garlic powder, ground black pepper, Italian seasoning, oregano, celery salt, Chinese five spice, coriander, and cumin, and I mixed it all together.  I then added four large heaping double tablespoons of Hellmann's olive oil mayonnaise, 40% of a cup of extra virgin olive oil and 40% of a cup of Monari balsamic vinegar, and I mixed it all together.  I then put it all in a large Rubbermaid container with lid in the refrigerator to chill a for a few hours.   I will call it Hurricane Potato Salad.  There are about five pounds of it.  CIO

<888> 11/01/12 Thursday 3:05 P.M..   I ate two 3 ounce Purdue chicken cutlets, 12 ounces of mashed potatoes with Smart Balance Spread,  steamed broccoli crowns and baby carrots with extra virgin olive oil and Smart Balance spread, a 12 ounce glass of http://www.coke.com/ , and a cup of green tea with Splenda sweetener and Borden's lemon juice.  I called up Microsoft Security at 1-425-882-8080 to let them know my home office is fully functional.  CIO

<888> 11/01/12 Thursday 1:45 P.M..  There is a sign in front of the Y.M.C.A. downtown that people can shower and clean up there and charge up their cell phones.  I also noticed that Dave Peabody was still pumping gasoline at his station just north of the Y.M.C.A. on Chruch Street.  CIO

<888> 11/01/12 Thursday 1:20 P.M..  The Netgear storage device works in Vista.  I backed up some files to it.  I showered, an I cleaned up.  I threw out the garbage.  I went out, and Valley Road was blocked off.  I went by the central Greenwich Post Office, and I mailed the Microsoft Money 2007 Income versus spending report for October 2012 to an interested relative.  I then went to my 10:30 A.M. appointment.  I then sat out downtown briefly observing the normal Greenwich Avenue activity. I then went by the A&P Fresh, and they have no electricity power, just a little bit of generator power.  The had a big dumpster by the side of the store, they had thrown out all of their perishable food into.  I bought a package of four fresh muffins expire November 5, 2012 for $4.59, a loaf of Pepperidge Farm 15 grain whole grain bread for $4.29, a five pound bag of Dole Idaho potatoes for $3.99, a 33 ounce bag of Eight O'clock hazelnut coffee beans for $16.99, and bananas for .79 a pound for $1.90 for $31.76 total.  I chatted with a couple of customers.  I then returned home.  The Shell station at 401 West Putnam Avenue had orange cones in front of their pumps, so I guess they are out of gasoline.  The Mobil station just further west is quite busy.  I chatted with a neighbor.  I chatted with a relative.  CIO

<888> 11/01/12 Thursday 8:00 A.M..  I will first reboot into Vista and see if the Netgear storage device works with it first.  I will then shut down the computer, and I will get ready for my 10:30 A.M. appointment.  CIO

<888> 11/01/12 Thursday 8:00 A.M..  To save money, I have four external hard drive enclosures with backups on them.  I will take one of them, and I will replace its hard drive with the Netgear storage device hard drive, and if I need to restore the backup from the original hard drive, I will swap it back in.  I will do that sometime in the near future.  CIO

<888> 11/01/12 Thursday 7:45 A.M..  To put the hard drive in from my Netgear storage device, I could order Buy.com - SIIG JU-SA0F12-S1 Drive Enclosure - External - Silver - 1 x Total Bay - 1 x 3.5" Bay - USB 3.0 , but it might be simpler to just order an external USB hard drive.  CIO
