A. Introduction (Please Read First)
-----------------------------------
This setup guide is for Win 95 Dial-Up Networking (DUN) using PPP
and
offers you a 32 bit Internet connection and will allow you to use
any 32
or 16 bit Internet software. Our Win 95 dialer is actually an
interface
over DUN and it can be used as an enhancement to the service. The
Win
95 kit is available from http://www.ibm.net/access. You still
must have
Dial-Up Networking and the Network components installed and
properly
configured for our Win 95 dialer to work, so verify the settings.
Note: PPP is only supported on V.34 lines- the US and Canada
gateways =
are
all V.34. Some international gateways are 14.4 and only support
SLIP.
B. Windows 95 Dial-up Networking (DUN) PPP Setup
-------------------------------------------------
1. Installing Dial-up Networking.
Note: Skip this step if Dial-Up Networking is already installed.

e. Once you are connected you can minimize the CONNECTED TO box
and
run any Internet application you please.
IF YOU CAN NOT GET CONNECTED OR YOUR BROWSER IS UNABLE TO
RESOLVE ANY
WWW SITES, THEN PLEASE READ THROUGH THE TROUBLE-SHOOTING SECTION.
C. Server Information to Setup Your Internet Software
-----------------------------------------------------
Use the following information to configure your internet
applications:
-Email Address- The initial email address is userid@domain
where the
userid is your login userid (i.e. userid@ibm.net).
-WWW Server (homepage)- Your Internet Homepage (i.e. =
http://www.ibm.net).
-POP (Incoming) Mail Server- Is 1 of 3 servers, either:
pop1.ibm.net
(aka pop01.ny.us.ibm.net) or pop3.ibm.net (aka
pop03.ca.us.ibm.net) or
pop4.ibm.net. You were assigned 1 of the 3 during registration.
You
can try all three until to properly retrieve your mail or go to
the URL
http://reg.ibm.net/getuserinfo.html to look it up. To properly
retrieve
mail you must enter your email username which is:
youraccount.youruserid
replacing with your actual login account and userid. Your email
password
is the same as your login password and it must also be specified.
-SMTP (Outgoing) Mail Server- smtp1.ibm.net. This allows you
to
send email and stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.
-News (Usenet or NNTP) server- news1.ibm.net or news2.ibm.net.
You can
use either one of these servers to view Internet news groups.
Set-up for MS Exchange (Original Windows 95 version off the
CD-ROM):
1. Click the INBOX, click TOOLS, and choose SERVICES.
2. Highlight INTERNET MAIL and click on PROPERTIES.
3. Enter your name, e-mail address in format of userid@ibm.net,
Pop
Server (see above), userid, and password.
4. Click on ADVANCED options and enter the smtp server.
5. Click OK then APPLY then OK again.
6. This is all we know about the Microsoft Exchange, if you have
any questions or problems regarding this product then please
contact Microsoft. There are other e-mail clients available
which include Eudora, Pegasus, etc. if you choose.
All these packages can be found off of WWW Search Engines ie Web
=
Crawler.
Or choose "Software Sites" on the page
http://www.ibm.net under Links.
D. Trouble-Shooting Section
---------------------------
-If you have having a problem even getting connected please go
through
each step one at a time starting with the Step #1.
-If you are having performance problems (i.e. Modem Dropping
please go
through steps #5, 11 through 13 first).
Note: Anytime you receive the error "Unable to Establish a
Compatible
Set of Network Protocols" you must re-boot and try again.
1. Use PING to determine if you are indeed connected:
The best way to test (or verify) you are connected to the
Internet is by
using a tool called PING. Windows 95 has a Ping program that can
be
easily used in an MS-DOS Window. After you connect to the
Internet pull
up an MS-DOS Window and type "ping www.ibm.net"
(without the quotes). =
If
you get replies then you are connected if not go through the
below =
fixes.
If you can ping and your browser is failing then search your
hard-drive
for WINSOCK.DLL's. Rename all the Winsock.dll files not in the
WINDOWS =
or
WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP directories. The winsock.dll should be 42K. You
can
use Find: Files or Folders in the Start Button to search for the
these
files and once found RIGHT CLICK the file and choose Rename.
2. Download our Win 95 Kit and Connect using that:
Download our Win 95 Dialer kit from www.ibm.net/access and use
this.
3. Verify the set-up guide again:
Please verify the settings in your software again. Make sure you
have
followed the guide EXACTLY as shown.
4. Verify Network Configuration:
Make sure you have configured the Network components as listed in
this
guide and remove any unnecessary components. You should only have
the
three suggested properties. Contact your Lan Administrator for
help.
5. Lower your Modem Settings:
Click My Computer, then DUN. Right click the Internet Connection
Icon
and choose Properties. Choose Configure and drop the Maximum
Speed to
19,200 and click the Connection Tab and choose Port Settings.
Uncheck
Use FIFO Buffers after lowering the Receive and Transmit Buffers.
Retry
your connection. If you can connect or your modem no longer drops
try
try slowly increasing these settings to find your maximum
performance.
6. Erase and Recreate your Internet Connection Icon:
Many times there can be other processes associated with the DUN
that can
cause problems. Try deleting the icon and recreating a new one.
7. Reinstall the Network Properties:
Sometimes the Network Property installation may not complete or
can
be corrupt. Try remove the properties: TCP/IP, Dial-Up Adapter,
and
Client for Microsoft Networks. Reboot your computer then re-add
the
properties and configure them and reboot.
8. Try Enabling the Global DNS Settings:
Try ENABLING DNS Configuration in the Network TCPIP Properties.
See the
network configuration procedures. Choose ENABLE DNS and type
INTERNET =
for
the Host and IBM.NET for the Domain, and add the DNS Servers as
well.
9. Dial into another Gateway to verify the problem is not
local:
If every thing checks out OK it is either a problem with the
local
gateway or a local telephone line problem. Contact the helpdesk.
10. Try Using SLIP:
Try configuring for SLIP instead of PPP
11. Verify your Modem is not Software Error Correcting:
These modems have an RPI chipset and will be a 14.4 CLASS I
modem, and
do not support hardware error correction. Our service requires
hardware
correction so these modems will be unreliable at best. The best
way to
find out if you have a software error correcting modem is to call
your
modem manufacturer and ask them about your modem model.
12. Verify you have the Latest Modem Drivers:
Download the latest modem drivers from your manufacturer and
install
them. You can also try installing the Standard Modem Type from
Windows
95's modem listing.
13. Verify you have the latest Modem FIRMWARE Revision:
High end modems offer what is called a Firmware Upgrade (which
can =
update
your Error Correction protocols and sometimes increase your baud
rate).
Contact your modem manufacturer for details.
